Removing Keratin Bond Extensions at Home 2026 – Steps & Tools

Removing keratin bond extensions (also called seal or fusion extensions) is done by softening the keratin bond with a remover solution and gently cracking it open with removal pliers. It can be done at home if you work slowly and use the right tools – but it takes time and care. This guide covers the steps, the tools and the situations where you should leave the job to a professional.

What tools do you need?

  • Bond remover – a solvent that softens the keratin bond. Available in our online store.
  • Removal pliers – the bond is gently cracked with pliers so the solvent can penetrate. See our materials and tools.
  • Extension brush – to gently brush out the freed strands and your own hair.
  • Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner – for washing and treating your hair afterwards.

Step-by-step removal

  1. Divide your hair into sections and start from the lowest row of bonds.
  2. Apply remover directly onto the bond and let it work for a moment.
  3. Squeeze the bond gently with the pliers from different directions so the keratin cracks and the solvent soaks in.
  4. Slide the bond carefully down and off the hair – never pull or tear. If it does not move, add more remover and wait.
  5. Brush the section open and move on to the next bond.
  6. Finish by washing your hair and doing a deep conditioning treatment.

Reserve plenty of time: removing a full head (100–150 bonds) typically takes 2–4 hours at home. A professional stylist does the same job in 1–2 hours.

When should you see a professional instead?

  • If the bonds are tangled or have grown far from the scalp.
  • If your own hair is fragile, thinning or heavily processed.
  • If you want to reinstall the same hair right away – a professional preserves the material in the best condition.
  • If removal feels painful or your own hair is coming out – stop and book a salon appointment.

Our honest recommendation: watch a professional do your first removal, then decide whether you can handle it at home yourself.

Aftercare: restoring your hair

After removal your own hair needs moisture and gentle care. Do a deep treatment, brush carefully and let your scalp rest for 1–2 weeks before new extensions. See our guide to the best extension care products and tips for healthy hair growth.

Can the same hair be reinstalled?

Yes – quality human hair survives 1–2 reinstallations. The old keratin is removed and new bonds are attached. Read more in our method comparison guide. If you are considering new hair, browse our hair extensions collection.

Frequently asked questions

Can keratin bonds be removed without remover?

We do not recommend it. Cracking the bond without solvent stresses your own hair and can break it. Remover makes the process gentle.

Does removal damage your own hair?

Not when done correctly. Some naturally shed hairs will come out with the bonds – they were trapped inside the bond and this is completely normal.

How is tape extension removal different?

Tape-ins use their own remover and the process is usually faster. See our separate guide to removing tape extensions at home.
