Removing Tape Extensions at Home 2026 – Remover & Steps

Tape-in extensions are typically removed every 6–8 weeks, once the roots have grown out. You can do the removal at home too, as long as you use a proper remover and don’t peel the tapes off by force. This guide covers the tools you need and the removal step by step – safely, without damaging your own hair.

When should you remove the tapes?

It’s time to remove when the tape roots have grown 1.5–2.5 cm away from the scalp. Tapes left in too long can tangle at the root and stress your own hair. Most tape extensions can be reattached with new tape after removal.

What you’ll need

  • Tape extension remover (alcohol- or oil-based) – dissolves the adhesive.
  • Hair oil or coconut oil – an alternative for gentle loosening.
  • Hair clips, a comb, and a towel.

Removal step by step

  1. Section your hair and secure it with clips so you can reach the tapes.
  2. Spray or drip remover onto the tape bond and let it work for a few seconds.
  3. Gently slide the tapes apart – don’t pull. Let the adhesive give way on its own.
  4. Remove adhesive residue from your hair with remover and comb through.
  5. Wash your hair and the tapes (if reattaching) and let them dry.

Reattachment

Quality tape extensions last for several applications. Reattachment needs fresh tape; the old adhesive is removed from the wefts with remover. Read more about the whole process in our removal and reattachment guide, and about caring for them in our extension care guide.

Common mistakes

Never peel tapes off dry – it pulls out your own hair too. Don’t rely on heat alone to soften the adhesive without remover. If you’re unsure, have the removal done by a stylist.
