Ombré and balayage are two different techniques aimed at the same result: a soft colour gradient from a darker root to lighter ends. Extensions let you wear these shade combinations without bleaching your own hair – pre-coloured wefts or strands are fitted among your own hair, so the result is full and multi-toned from day one. Ombré or balayage – what is the difference?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but they mean different things. Ombré is a distinct, horizontal gradient: the root is dark, the ends are clearly lighter, and the transition happens at a set height. Balayage is a technique where lightness is painted through the hair irregularly, so the result looks like hair lightened by the sun. Balayage is subtler and more natural; ombré is bolder and more graphic.

Choosing shades for extensions

The secret to a convincing gradient is matching the root shade precisely to your own hair. When the top blends seamlessly, the transition towards the lighter ends looks natural and the attachment points stay invisible. Choose ends 2–4 shades lighter than your own root so the gradient reads clearly but still believably.

• Dark root: pick extensions whose upper section matches your own hair as closely as possible.
• Warm shades: caramel, honey and copper suit warm skin tones and brown hair.
• Cool shades: ash and beige tones balance a cool skin tone and keep the gradient fresh.
• Amount of contrast: the bigger the gap between root and ends, the more ombré it reads; a subtle gap creates a balayage effect.

Attachment method and how the gradient behaves

A gradient works best with methods where the hair sits in several layers at different heights on the head. With tape extensions the thin wefts are spread evenly, so the lighter ends show naturally as the hair moves. Tape extensions are usually moved up every 6–8 weeks as the hair grows, since hair grows roughly 1–1.5 cm a month. Keratin bond extensions stay in for 2–3 months and suit balayage particularly well, because the small strands blend invisibly into your own hair. How to keep the gradient beautiful

Lightened ends are more fragile than the root, so the right care keeps the tone clean and prevents brassiness.

• Use a sulphate-free shampoo that does not dry the extensions or fade the colour.
• Always apply heat protection before straightening or curling.
• Brush from the ends upward so the attachment points are not strained.
• Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and tangling.
• For a cool-toned gradient, an occasional silver shampoo neutralises yellow tones.
