What is kanekalon?
Kanekalon is a high-quality synthetic hair fibre that looks and moves like real hair but costs far less and weighs much less on the scalp. It is the standard material for braiding styles because it holds a braid neatly, resists tangling and comes in colours that natural hair simply does not.
Heat resistance varies by line. Part of our range is heat resistant and part is not — each product page states which it is, so check the product before applying any heat. Most fibre braids are finished by sealing the ends in hot water rather than with an iron.
Pre-stretched or non-pre-stretched?
Pre-stretched fibre comes ready-tapered at the ends, which speeds up braiding and reduces waste — ideal for neat, uniform box braids. Non-pre-stretched fibre is the traditional option that you shape to length yourself, and it gives you more control over thickness. Both are available in a wide range of shades.
How much fibre do you need?
A full head of braids usually takes several packs — typically 4–8 depending on your hair type and how thick you want the braids. Individual highlights or a single ponytail need considerably less. Exact pack sizes are listed on each product page.
What you can make with it
- Box braids, knotless braids and small braids
- Twists and locs — see also our ready-made locs and braids
- Ponytails and buns — see the ponytail range
- Colourful streaks, ombré blends and festival looks
Synthetic fibre or real hair?
Kanekalon is synthetic and made for braiding styles that last weeks. If you want length and volume that you can wash, curl and colour like your own hair, choose our real human hair extensions instead — tape-in or keratin bond. Tools and care products are in materials.
Frequently asked questions
Is kanekalon fibre heat resistant?
Some of our fibres are heat resistant and some are not — the product page states which. Always check before using an iron, and note that most fibre braids are sealed with hot water rather than heat styling.
What is the difference between pre-stretched and non-pre-stretched?
Pre-stretched fibre is already tapered at the ends, so braiding is faster and neater. Non-pre-stretched fibre is shaped by hand and gives more control over thickness.
How many packs do I need for a full head?
Usually 4–8 packs depending on hair type and braid size. Individual streaks or a ponytail need far less. Pack sizes are listed on each product page.
Can kanekalon be braided into my own hair?
Yes. The fibre is braided together with your own hair to add length, thickness and colour, and the style holds for weeks.
How are fibre braids finished?
The ends are most often sealed in hot water, which closes them neatly. Always follow the instructions on the individual product.
