Mago and 6D Hair Extensions – New Methods Explained 2026
New hair extension methods appear constantly. Two of the most asked-about newcomers are Mago extensions and 6D extensions. In this article we explain how these methods work, who they suit and how they differ from the familiar tape-in and keratin bond extensions.
What are Mago extensions?
In the Mago method, thin strands of hair are attached to your own hair with tiny metal beads (micro rings) – no heat and no glue. The attachment is clamped with pliers, so no chemicals are needed at all. The method has spread from Asia to Europe, and its particular strength is that the small attachments work even on short and thin hair.
- No heat, no glue – gentle on your own hair
- Maintenance by repositioning – the ring is opened and moved closer to the scalp as your hair grows
- Works on short hair too – see our guide to extensions for short hair
- Fast removal – the ring is opened with pliers, no solvents needed
What are 6D extensions?
In the 6D method, pre-prepared hair strands are attached with a special tool (the 6D device) that fastens several strands at once in neat rows. This makes installation remarkably fast – a full head can be done in about an hour at best. The attachment sits flat against the head.
- Fastest installation – the device attaches a row at a time
- Flat result – attachments don’t show when combing
- Even weight distribution – rows spread the weight over a wide area
Mago and 6D vs. tape and keratin bonds
| Method | Attachment | Heat/glue | Maintenance interval | Availability in Finland |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tape-in extensions | Flat tape | Adhesive | 6–8 weeks | Excellent |
| Keratin bond extensions | Keratin bond | Heat | 2–3 months | Excellent |
| Mago | Micro ring | Neither | 1.5–2.5 months | Growing – ask your stylist |
| 6D | Device-attached rows | No heat | 1.5–2.5 months | Still rare |
With every method, the end result depends above all on the quality of the hair material and the skill of the installer. Compare method lifespans in our method comparison guide.
Who are the new methods for?
Mago is a good choice if you want to avoid heat and glue entirely or if your hair is short. 6D suits busy people who value fast installation. Both are still rarer in Finnish salons than tape and keratin bonds – so first make sure there is an installer near you who knows the method. You can also get help choosing in our free consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Do Mago extensions suit thin hair?
Yes – the small micro rings distribute weight evenly, and the method is glue-free and heat-free. Tape-in extensions are also an excellent option for thin hair.
Can the same hair be used across methods?
Quality human hair is the most important part of the result regardless of method. Ask your stylist which format (bond, tape, ring) you should buy for your chosen method.
Are the new methods better than tape and keratin?
Not automatically – they are different. Tape and keratin are proven, and skilled installers can be found all over Finland. The new methods add options for special needs.
