Hair Extensions at Home 2026 – DIY Step-by-Step
You can put in hair extensions at home too – especially clip-in and tape-in extensions. DIY application saves money and gives you the freedom to change your look whenever you like. This guide covers which extensions are suitable to do yourself and how to apply them step by step.
Which extensions are suitable for DIY?
- Clip-in – the easiest and fastest, applied and removed by yourself daily.
- Tape-in – doable at home with practice, last 6–8 weeks.
- Bond (keratin) – require tools and precision, best left to a professional.
If you’re unsure about the method, read our clip-in vs permanent comparison and the DIY vs professional guide.
What you’ll need
For clip-in application you just need a mirror, hair clips, a comb, and a flat brush. For DIY tape-in you’ll also need the tapes, a tail comb, and possibly pliers.
Applying clip-in extensions step by step
- Comb your hair and part a horizontal section above the nape.
- Attach the widest clip weft at the root of the section, clips snug against the scalp.
- Work upward one section at a time, with narrower wefts on the sides.
- Leave the top layer of your own hair to cover the clips.
- Blend your own hair and the extensions by combing lightly.
DIY tape-in application in brief
Tapes are attached around a thin section of your own hair using the sandwich technique, as close to the root as possible (not onto the scalp). Start at the nape and work upward. Press the bonds firmly at the end. For correct brushing, read our brushing guide.
Tips for a natural result
Choose the right shade and enough wefts so the extensions blend in. Don’t clip in to the exact same spot every single day. Remove clip-in extensions for the night.
When should you see a stylist?
Bond extensions, large quantities, or demanding color blending are best done by a professional. At home you’ll do well with clip-in and tape-in extensions.
