How chlorine and pool water affect hair extensions

Chlorine is added to pools to keep the water clean, but it is a harsh oxidiser that strips natural oils from hair and can leave extensions dry, dull and prone to tangling. The effect is stronger on extensions than on your own scalp hair, because bonded strands and taped wefts are not fed by the natural sebum from your scalp. Salt water at the beach behaves similarly, drawing moisture out of the hair shaft. Before you get in the water

The single most useful trick is to saturate your extensions with clean tap water before entering the pool. Hair behaves like a sponge: once the strands are already full of fresh water, they absorb far less of the chlorinated water around you. Follow these steps at the poolside shower:

Rinse the extensions thoroughly with fresh, lukewarm water until fully soaked.
Work a little leave-in conditioner or a light oil through the mid-lengths and ends to add a protective barrier.
Gather the hair into a loose braid or a low, soft bun. Braiding keeps the strands aligned and dramatically reduces tangling once the hair is wet and moving.
If you swim often, a snug silicone swim cap over the braided hair is the most reliable shield against chlorine.

Care routine by extension type
