Hair Extension Removal and Reattachment – Complete Guide
Why a Professional Is Important
Hair extensions should always be removed by a professional. Wrong removal technique can damage natural hair, break strands, or leave adhesive residue. A professional uses the right tools and techniques that protect your natural hair.
Keratin Bond Removal
Bonds are removed with a special plier tool that crushes the keratin bond. The bond then dissolves with solvent and is carefully removed. The process takes about 1–2 hours and is painless.
After Removal
- The stylist thoroughly brushes and washes hair
- Loose hair (normal, natural shedding) rinses away
- The scalp gets to “rest” – we recommend 1–2 weeks before new extensions
Tape Extension Removal
Tapes are removed by applying solvent on the tape. The adhesive softens and tapes slide off gently. The process is faster than bond removal, typically 30–60 minutes.
Reattachment
Quality human hair extensions can be reattached 1–2 times:
- Bonds: Old bonds are cut off and new keratin bonds added. Hair must be in good condition.
- Tapes: Tape strips are replaced with new ones – same hair material, new adhesive. Usually 2–3 rounds possible.
Never Do This Yourself
- Don’t pull extensions out by force
- Don’t use regular oil as solvent – it doesn’t dissolve keratin sufficiently
- Don’t cut extensions off with scissors – you may cut your natural hair
Book a removal appointment at your salon in advance. A good salon will assess extension condition and recommend next steps.
